Letters from Paris (2021)
Letters from Paris was a zine published to the web in seven issues between August and November 2021.
2021 was a strange year in Paris. The city that emerged from the winter confinements and into the summer finally free of restrictions that year wasn’t the one I had known in 2019. Its swagger and ebullience were missing.
I had been anxious going into the year to commence the Four Seasons as soon as the restrictions were lifted, but I soon realised that this wasn’t a Paris I wanted to capture for that project. So Four Seasons was postponed until 2022. This opened up the possibility of doing something else in the meantime.
For a while I’d been interested in the potential of a kind of visual bulletin of the more everyday experience of living in somewhere like Paris. Here was the opportunity to explore that.
That wasn’t what ended up emerging, but I was surprised and pleased with what arose in its place. The issues reflects how each was produced: over a few long, slow walks through Paris, camera in hand, no particular destination in mind.
They ended up capturing a particular feeling. More of a poem than a narrative.
